A leader must possess a competent personality, but does competence here simply mean looking neat and well dressed? Wearing a tie and a suit like other corporate leaders? Of course not! Competence in a leader’s character refers to someone who has the necessary skills, intelligence, and expertise to lead effectively.

A competent leader is someone with a mature and sound mindset. They can understand different perspectives and make the right decisions, even in challenging situations. Additionally, they can manage their team effectively, not only by delegating tasks but also by building cooperation, morale, and trust among team members.

Clear communication is an important part of this competence a competent leader can convey their vision and goals in a way that everyone can understand. Furthermore, leadership competence means being able to manage oneself remaining honest, firm, and fair, even when faced with external or internal pressures. A truly competent leader is someone who can balance their personal interests with the interests of others, always striving to make the best decisions for everyone involved.

However, while these qualities are important for leadership, true competence goes beyond interpersonal skills and practical abilities it involves understanding the deeper purpose behind our work. A competent leader, especially one with a clear moral compass, must recognize that true work is not just for personal gain or for the benefit of others, but ultimately for the Creator of the universe.

In this context, as mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah (9:105):
Katakanlah (Nabi Muhammad), “Bekerjalah! Maka, Allah, rasul-Nya, dan orang-orang mukmin akan melihat pekerjaanmu. Kamu akan dikembalikan kepada (Zat) yang mengetahui yang gaib dan yang nyata. Lalu, Dia akan memberitakan kepada kamu apa yang selama ini kamu kerjakan.

This verse emphasizes that the essence of work is to serve the Lord Of The Universe, who governs all of creation. Logically, true work must be directed toward Lord of the universe (who created us and gave us purpose). Working solely for the benefit of other humans can be seen as “providing a service,” but work as a true form of devotion is aimed at fulfilling our higher purpose, which is to serve the Creator.

A competent leader understands that work is not just about seeking worldly rewards or personal recognition, rather, it’s about aligning actions with a greater divine purpose.

Thus, leadership competence should be based on the understanding that every action a leader takes, every decision they make, should reflect their devotion to the Creator. Understanding that work is not just about working for other people, but that working competently means serving the Lord Of The Universe, allows a leader to lead with integrity, sincerity, and dedication, without expecting worldly rewards. Work itself becomes an act of worship and a responsibility we have as part of His creation.

Remember this:
Work for the Creator, not for others. “Providing a service” is a more accurate description than the term “work” in this context

In conclusion, a truly competent leader, who understands their role as a servant of the Creator, will work with a high level of integrity and commitment, aligning their leadership with the purpose of serving a higher calling while striving for the well being of those they lead.
