Assertive individuals may come across as intimidating due to their direct and clear communication style. However, this contrasts sharply with harshness, which stems from emotional responses like anger or belittling others. Assertiveness is grounded in the ability to uphold one\u2019s principles without causing harm or disrespect, whereas harshness undermines relationships through negativity.<\/p><p>Throughout history, many great leaders have managed to blend assertiveness with wisdom. A notable example is The Prophet Muhammad SAW who was known for his firmness in upholding the truth while still being considerate of others\u2019 feelings in his communication. After the Battle of Uhud, when those around him made mistakes, he didn\u2019t immediately judge them harshly. Instead, he engaged them in dialogue, showing empathy while remaining assertive in decision-making. This incident illustrates the balance between being assertive and being sensitive to the situation.<\/p><p>This concept aligns with Surah Ali Imran, verse 159, where Allah\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var(--font-color);\">commands the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to be gentle\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var(--font-color);\">with his community yet firm in his decisions. The verse states:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"text-align: var(--text-align); color: var(--font-color);\">\u201cIt is by the mercy of Allah that you are gentle with them. If you had\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">you\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">This verse is situated in a significant historical context where the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">Prophet needed to maintain the unity of his followers after facing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">considerable challenges. Even though he held authority and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">assertiveness, he didn\u2019t adopt a harsh approach that could damage his\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">relationships with them. He understood that balancing good relations\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">while staying steadfast to one\u2019s principles is crucial for effective\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">leadership.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">Thus, true assertiveness involves upholding one\u2019s principles without\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--font-color); text-align: var(--text-align);\">breaking connections or making others feel intimidated.
